Response to India: A Test of Patience and A Victory of Strategy

A historical newspaper-style excerpt discussing Pakistan's 17-day deliberation period before responding to India's 1998 nuclear tests. The text highlights public criticism of the leadership, media satire, and eventual strategic response. Header reads: 'Response to India: A Test of Patience and A Victory of Strategy.

After India’s nuclear tests on May 17, 1998, Pakistan showed patience for 17 days. These 17 days were like 17 years for a nation. During this period, the leadership was accused of cowardice and failure to prioritise national security over economic interests. Satirical cartoons appeared on the pages of newspapers, and public protests gained momentum.

But on May 28, 1998, when the mountains of Chagai roared and announced Pakistan’s nuclear response, the entire world was stunned. This was not an emotional reaction but a thoughtful, professional decision.

The situation is the same today. The current defensive action (suppressing 80 Indian aircraft, dozens of missiles, and drones) was merely a defensive measure – not a response. The history of the Pakistan Army is witness that the right response is always given at the right time. This response will not be the result of emotion but of a completely professional military strategy.

For now, we are satisfied with the strength of our defence system and will wait for the appropriate time under the strategy to respond. May Allah be the supporter and helper of Pakistan.
